How do you build a skincare routine for dehydrated skin?

Build it like a gentle dry skin routine: a gentle cleanser, moisturiser on damp skin and morning sunscreen. Put harsh or alcohol-based cleansers aside.

Short answer. Build it like a gentle dry skin routine: a gentle cleanser, a moisturiser on damp skin and sunscreen in the morning. "Dehydrated skin" is a skincare label that the AAD and DermNet pages we checked do not define, so this routine follows their dry skin advice. DermNet says moisturisers generally work best when applied to damp skin (DermNet).

The morning face scan is the record. Look at the day 3 check-in, the day 7 report and the day 14 report, instead of one mirror glance.

Is dehydrated skin the same as dry skin?

The dermatology sources we checked do not split them. The AAD and DermNet pages we checked describe dry skin, not dehydrated skin. DermNet defines dry skin as skin lacking moisture in its outer layer (DermNet). For the dry skin version, read how do you build a skincare routine for dry skin.

Can oily skin be dehydrated?

Oily skin still needs moisturiser. The AAD says that even with oily skin, it is still important to apply moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated (AAD). It also says a face wash that is too harsh can irritate your skin and trigger more oil. For the full oily routine, read how do you build a skincare routine for oily skin.

3Sunscreen, SPF 30 or higher

If your skin also gets shiny, the AAD suggests a moisturiser labelled "oil free" and "noncomedogenic" (AAD).

What should you look for in a moisturiser?

Ingredients that hold water. Cleveland Clinic says humectants help draw moisture to your skin (Cleveland Clinic). The AAD lists glycerin and hyaluronic acid among the ingredients to look for when skin is dry (AAD).

What do dermatology sources say?

"Emollients generally work best if applied to damp skin" DermNet, Dry skin

For your routine, this means moisturiser goes on straight after you wash and pat dry.

What habits does the AAD suggest for dry-feeling skin?

The AAD names a few habits for dry skin. It suggests keeping showers to 5 to 10 minutes in warm water (AAD). It lists alcohol and fragrance among things to stop using. It also suggests using a humidifier at home.

How do you build the routine from what you own?

  1. Find your gentlest cleanser. Put harsh or alcohol-based ones aside, as the AAD advises for oily skin.
  2. Find a moisturiser with glycerin or hyaluronic acid. Check the ingredient list.
  3. Apply it on damp skin. Wash, pat dry and put it on straight away.
  4. Find your sunscreen. The AAD suggests broad spectrum and SPF 30 or higher.
  5. Follow it in Oleah. The morning face scan is the record. Look at the day 3 check-in, the day 7 report and the day 14 report, instead of one mirror glance.
  6. Change one product at a time. Test anything new on a small patch first (AAD).

The AAD says to see a dermatologist if your skin stays dry after trying its tips (AAD). If a product stings, burns or makes your skin red, wash it off and stop using it. If a doctor prescribed it, ask them first. If your skin stays sore, see a pharmacist or doctor. If it blisters or swells, see a doctor today. If your lips, tongue or throat swell, or you have trouble breathing, call emergency services now. Oleah is not a doctor and does not give medical advice.

How to check this on your own shelf

Oleah is an iPhone app for the skincare you already own. You add the products on your shelf or in your routine, and each morning you take a quick face scan that takes about 30 seconds. Oleah can flag products on your shelf that may not belong together. There is a check-in on day 3, a report on day 7 and a report on day 14. Oleah is not a doctor and does not give medical advice.
