What does a simple skincare routine include?

What a simple skincare routine includes morning and night, how to build it from the shelf you already own, and how to add one product at a time.

A basic skincare routine includes a cleanser, a moisturiser and sunscreen in the morning, then a cleanser and a moisturiser at night. You can build this simple skincare routine from the shelf you already own and add one product at a time, so you always know what each step is doing.

The three steps most routines share

Strip away the serums, the masks and the little sample tubes, and most routines come down to three jobs.

Cleanse. Wash off what built up on your face. Sunscreen, makeup, oil, the day.

Moisturise. Put back some comfort so your face doesn't feel tight.

Protect. Sunscreen in the morning, every morning, whatever the weather.

That's a full routine. Anything else on your shelf is an extra. Extras can be lovely, but they're easier to judge once the basics are steady.

Start with the shelf you already own

Before you buy anything, look at what you have. Most of us own more than we use.

  1. Take everything out. Every bottle, jar and tube from the bathroom cabinet, the bedside table and your bag. Line them up on the counter.
  2. Sort them into four piles. Cleansers. Moisturisers. Sunscreens. Everything else.
  3. Check the dates and the smell. If something has separated, changed colour or smells off, let it go.
  4. Pick one from each of the first three piles. Choose the ones your face already feels comfortable with. If you have two cleansers you like, pick the gentler one for now.
  5. Put the "everything else" pile in a box. Keep it under the sink. You'll come back to it.
  6. Keep the three you picked where you can see them. That's your simple skincare routine for the next couple of weeks.

A simple morning routine

Your morning routine can be short. Rinse with water or wash with a gentle cleanser, depending on how your face feels when you wake up. Then a moisturiser. Then sunscreen, as the last step before makeup.

If your skin feels comfortable in the morning, water alone is often enough. If you woke up shiny, a gentle cleanser makes sense.

A simple night routine

Night is where cleanser does most of its work. Wash your face properly to take off sunscreen and anything else from the day. Pat dry. Then moisturiser.

That's it. On a busy night, those two steps still count as a full routine.

Adding one product at a time

Once the basics have felt steady for a couple of weeks, you might want to bring something back from the box. This is where a simple routine stays simple.

  1. Choose one product. Just one. A serum, an eye cream, a toner, whatever you've been curious about.
  2. Decide when it goes on. Morning or night. Look at the label. Many thinner products go on after cleansing and before moisturiser.
  3. Patch test first. Apply a little to a small area along your jaw for a few days. Watch for redness, itching or stinging that doesn't settle.
  4. Add it to your routine. Keep everything else exactly the same.
  5. Give it a few weeks. Notice how your face feels and looks over that time.
  6. Then decide. Keep it, or put it back in the box. Only then think about the next product.

If you add three new things in one week and your face feels off, you won't know which one to blame. One at a time keeps the answer easy to find.

When to stop

If anything stings, burns or leaves your skin red, stop using it and go back to your three basics until your face settles. If irritation keeps going, see a dermatologist or doctor.

Cleanser is often the step people second guess most. If that's you, do you need cleanser morning and night walks through it calmly. And if your shelf has grown into more steps than you use, read when your routine feels like too much.

Where Oleah fits
