What goes into a night skincare routine?

What a night skincare routine includes, what order it goes in, and how to fit acids or retinol in on chosen nights using the products you already own.

A night skin care routine usually comes down to two steps: wash off the day with a cleanser, then put on a moisturiser. If you use an active like an acid or retinol, it goes between those two, on the nights you've picked for it, with plain nights in between.

The two steps that matter most at night

Cleanse. Wash off what built up on your face. Sunscreen, makeup, oil, the day.

Moisturise. Put back some comfort so your face doesn't feel tight.

Use a moisturiser your skin already likes. It doesn't need to be a special night cream.

That's a complete night routine. On a tired evening when you only manage those two, you haven't skipped anything.

How to build your night routine from your shelf

  1. Pick your night cleanser. Use the gentlest one you own that still takes off your sunscreen. If you wear heavy makeup, you might want a cleansing balm or oil first.
  2. Pick your moisturiser. One you know your face is comfortable with. Keep it next to the cleanser.
  3. Look at what else you own. Serums, acids, retinol, eye cream. Put them to one side for now.
  4. Run the two-step routine for a week or two. Notice how your face feels when you wake up.
  5. Bring back one extra at a time. Patch test it first on a small area along your jaw for a few evenings. Then add it after cleansing and before moisturiser.
  6. Give your active a few nights a week, not every night. Most people use acids and retinol on a few chosen nights. The other nights stay as cleanser and moisturiser.

What order does a night routine go in?

A loose rule is thinnest to thickest.

  • Cleanser
  • Any watery toner or essence, if you use one
  • Serum or active
  • Eye cream, if you use one
  • Moisturiser
  • A face oil, if you like one, goes on last

You don't need every layer. Most nights, cleanser and moisturiser are enough.

A simple week at night

Here's how a week might look if you use one acid and nothing else.

  • Monday: cleanser, acid, moisturiser
  • Tuesday: cleanser, moisturiser
  • Wednesday: cleanser, moisturiser
  • Thursday: cleanser, acid, moisturiser
  • Friday to Sunday: cleanser, moisturiser

If you use retinol too, give it its own nights, away from the acid. Planning acid, retinol and rest nights across the week is the idea behind skin cycling.

Small habits that help at night

Wash with lukewarm water, not hot. Pat dry with a clean towel. Apply moisturiser while your face is still a little damp. Change your pillowcase now and then.

None of this needs new products.

When to stop

If anything stings, burns or leaves your skin red, stop the new product and go back to cleanser and moisturiser until your face settles. If irritation keeps going, see a dermatologist or doctor.

If you haven't built your basics yet, start with a simple skincare routine made from the products you already own. For more on picking a cleanser for the evening, read about cleansing at night.

Night skincare routine FAQ

What should a nighttime skincare routine include? A cleanser and a moisturiser. Anything else is an extra you can add one at a time.

What order does a night face routine go in? Cleanser, then any serum or active on its chosen night, then moisturiser.

Should I use a different moisturiser at night? You don't have to. The one you use in the morning is often fine. Some people like something richer at night.

Can I use retinol and an acid on the same night? Many people keep them on separate nights, with plain nights in between.

Is it bad to skip my night skin routine? Try to wash your face before bed, especially if you wore sunscreen or makeup. On a tired night, cleanser and moisturiser are plenty.
