What is double cleansing?

What double cleansing is, how to do it with an oil or balm and your usual cleanser, and when one gentle cleanse is enough.

Double cleansing means washing your face twice in one go: first with an oil based cleanser or balm, then with a regular water based cleanser. Most people do it at night, on days they've worn sunscreen or makeup, and many find one gentle cleanse is enough on other evenings.

Why people double cleanse

Sunscreen, long wear makeup and the oil your skin makes through the day all cling to the face. An oil based cleanser loosens them. The second cleanser washes away what's left, including the first cleanser.

The habit is closely linked with Korean and Japanese skincare, where cleansing oils have been part of evening routines for a long time. It has since spread to bathroom shelves everywhere.

What you need

Two things, and you may already own both.

A first cleanser. A cleansing oil, a cleansing balm, or micellar water. These are the products that melt sunscreen and makeup.

A second cleanser. The gel, cream or gentle foaming cleanser you already use.

Look at your shelf before you buy. If you have a cleansing balm you got as a gift and forgot about, that's your first step.

How to double cleanse

  1. Start with dry hands and a dry face. Most oils and balms work best this way. Check the label on yours.
  2. Massage in the first cleanser. Use a small amount. Work it over your face for about a minute, including around the hairline and jaw where sunscreen sits.
  3. Add a splash of water. Many oils turn milky when water hits them. That's how they rinse away.
  4. Rinse well. Use lukewarm water.
  5. Use your second cleanser. A small amount on damp skin, gently, for about thirty seconds.
  6. Rinse and pat dry. Use a clean towel. Then carry on with the rest of your night routine.

If you use micellar water as your first step, sweep it over your face with a cotton pad until the pad comes away mostly clean, then go straight to step five.

Do you need to double cleanse every night?

No. Double cleansing is a tool for the nights that need it.

Days you wore sunscreen, makeup or both are the obvious ones. On a lazy Sunday indoors with a bare face, a single gentle cleanse is usually plenty.

In the morning, most people don't double cleanse at all. Water or one gentle cleanser is often enough.

Signs it's too much

Your face shouldn't feel squeaky or tight after washing. If it does, your second cleanser might be too strong, or you might be double cleansing more often than your skin likes. Try a gentler second cleanser, or drop to double cleansing only on makeup days.

If anything stings, burns or stays red, stop and go back to one gentle cleanse until your face settles. If irritation keeps going, see a dermatologist or doctor.

Patch test any new cleansing oil or balm first, on a small area along your jaw for a few evenings, especially if it's scented.

Where it fits in your routine

Double cleansing is the start of your night routine. After it, the rest stays the same: any serum or active on its chosen night, then moisturiser.

If you're still deciding about mornings, read do you need cleanser morning and night. And if you have oily or combination skin, you might find double cleansing feels comfortable on sunscreen nights. Keep the second cleanser gentle either way.
